January 8, 2009 SENT BY FAX Hon. Dalton McGuinty, M.P.P. Premier of Ontario Main Legislative Building, Room 281 Queen's Park Toronto Ontario M7A 1A4 FAX: 416-325-3745 Dear Premier, The Anti-Strike Group and YorkNotHostage.com are a coalition of approximately 4,000 York University students who have united to end the nine-week-old strike that has effectively shut down our university. Today our group asked York University and striking CUPE Local 3903 to establish a timeframe for the completion of negotiations to end the strike. Under our timeframe proposal, negotiations would continue until no later than January 15, the day that the strike will be ten weeks old. If a settlement is not reach on or before January 15, all unresolved issue would be submitted to an arbitrator, with no further strike or lock-action by the union or employer. If accepted by both parties, this proposal will make it possible to guarantee to York University’s 50,000 students that classes will resume no later than January 19. A copy of our proposal is attached for your information. If CUPE Local 3903 and York University will not agree to this timeframe proposal, we ask your government to intervene immediately, recall the Legislature, and pass back-to-work legislation as quickly as possible. Yours truly, [original signed] Lyndon Koopmans Co-Organizer Att. c: Hon. John Milloy, M.P.P., Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities; Mr. Bob Runciman, M.P.P., Leader of the Official Opposition; Mr. Howard Hampton, M.P.P., NDP Party Leader |
